The Work of Our Hands, The Care of Our Hearts

In Haiti, spiritual care doesn’t happen in a classroom.

It happens in the heat of a soccer field, in the laughter echoing through the courtyard, in the tears that come when a child receives their very first award for honesty. It happens when we pause long enough to see each other—to really see—the way Christ sees us.

At Hands & Feet Project, we don’t separate spiritual care from daily life. It is the air we breathe in our Circle of Care—woven through family preservation, education, employment, and discipleship. And sometimes, it looks like a Vacation Bible School or our Village Values Celebration. But at its core, it’s the same steady rhythm: walking with one another as we grow into who God created us to be.

Step Right Up: A Gospel That Dances

This summer, our campuses came alive for Vacation Bible School, and the theme said it all: “Step Right Up!”—an invitation for every child to step into the life Jesus has for them.

It was loud, colorful, and alive. Children sang until their voices gave out. They clapped to Deep Cries Out in Kreyòl and English, dancing with abandon that would make anyone want to join in.

At our Jacmel campus, Roodly, our ringmaster and emcee, “Simon,” carried the show with effortless joy. He translated lessons, cheered on games, and reminded the children that faith can be both deep and delightfully fun.

At our Grand Goâve campus, we watched our older boys lead with quiet confidence—steady hands guiding younger ones through games and memory verses. We heard girls like Nadège and Wildaline pray not just for their own needs, but for the healing of others. We saw children speak Scripture as if it already lived inside them.

The lessons carried the rhythm of truth: Follow Jesus. Forgive freely. Receive salvation.

Children learned forgiveness by trying to lift a bag of rocks—heavy with the weight of grudges—and discovering how light life feels when you let go. They built fishing poles out of pretzels and peanut butter, turning snack time into a story of calling. They wore the crosses they made with their own hands, small reminders that salvation isn’t abstract—it’s personal.

Village Values: Living What We Believe

A few weeks later, the heartbeat of that same message echoed through our Village Values Weekend, when our teams from Jacmel and Grand Goâve came together to celebrate love, honesty, obedience, and responsibility.

What began as a day of games and awards became something deeper: a picture of the Kingdom of God alive in our village. When Michelle called each Haitian staff member to the front—house moms with babies in their arms, drivers, cooks, social workers, maintenance workers, pastors, guards—it was a holy moment. A visual sermon about unity, gratitude, and shared purpose.

Tears came as Natacha reminded the children that it takes all of us to build something lasting. Every meal cooked, every tear wiped, every prayer whispered—it all shapes the environment where children grow in love and truth.

Even the soccer game became a parable. Staff versus kids. The staff finally won this year, and their joy was contagious. On the sidelines, laughter mixed with shouts of victory, babies being passed between cheering arms, girls joining the game for the first time. It was a snapshot of family—messy, joyful, and rooted in belonging.

Because love isn’t just spoken, it’s demonstrated. Honesty isn’t just taught, it’s lived. Responsibility isn’t an expectation, it’s an invitation. Obedience isn’t control—it’s freedom in motion.

The Thread That Holds It All

Both Vacation Bible School and Village Values point back to one thing: the Gospel lived out through community.

Spiritual care, for us, is not a program. It’s presence. It’s the slow, steady work of nurturing hearts while building families, supporting staff, and creating safe spaces for faith to take root.

When our children see their caregivers honored, when they worship with joy, when they experience love that feels like home—they glimpse what the Kingdom of Heaven looks like here and now.

This is why we do what we do. Not to host another event, but to cultivate environments where children and families can encounter Jesus through daily faithfulness, laughter, and love.
